Annual Maintenance Calendar for Wood Flooring – Each Season Has Its Focus

Wood floor maintenance is not about “fixing problems when they occur”; it should follow a seasonal rhythm, with different priorities for each quarter. Spring (March‑May): temperatures rise and humidity increases – the floor “wakes up”. Give the floor a thorough cleaning using a well‑wrung mop with a neutral cleaner to remove dust and grime accumulated over winter. Check that expansion gaps are not blocked by debris. If winter gaps are too large, consider filling them with filler. Also, turn on the dehumidifier or use air‑conditioning dehumidification mode to protect against the “returning south” dampness.

Summer (June‑August): high temperature and high humidity – this is the peak season for buckling. The core of maintenance is humidity and temperature control. Run the air conditioner in dehumidification mode for 2‑3 hours daily, and avoid prolonged direct sunlight (use sheer curtains). If localised buckling occurs, don’t panic – increase ventilation and dehumidification; most mild buckling will recover on its own. Never wax or oil the floor in summer, as wax can melt and become sticky in the heat.

Autumn (September‑November): the air becomes dry, and the floor begins to shrink. This is the time to “rehydrate”. Use a humidifier to maintain 40‑60% humidity, apply a maintenance oil to hard‑wax‑oil floors, and give lacquered floors a light coat of wax. Check for new gaps – those under 2 mm are normal; larger gaps may need professional attention.

Winter (December‑February): heating is on, and the floor loses moisture fastest. Mop twice a week with a well‑wrung mop (no standing water), and keep the humidifier running. Regularly wipe the surface with a soft cloth and specialised maintenance oil to form a protective film that reduces moisture loss. Throughout the year, daily dust removal is fundamental – vacuum at least twice a week. Remember, maintenance follows nature’s rhythm, and the floor will reward your care with lasting beauty.
