The "Supporting Role Philosophy" of Baseboards – Big Considerations for a Small Component

Baseboards are often treated as the "supporting actor" in wood floor installation, but this unassuming component determines the finishing quality and service life of the entire flooring project. The first function of baseboards is to "hide imperfection" – they cover the mandatory 8‑12 mm expansion gap between floor and wall. Without baseboards, that gap would be unsightly and would become a passage for dust and insects. The second function is to protect the wall base from mops, brooms and furniture bumps.

The choice of material for baseboards matters greatly. Solid wood baseboards offer the best texture and complement solid wood floors perfectly, but they are expensive and sensitive to moisture. HDF baseboards provide good value but can swell when wet. PVC baseboards are waterproof but look less premium. Aluminium baseboards are modern, minimal, durable and non‑warping – ideal for minimalist styles. When selecting, the height should match the ceiling height – choose narrow (4‑6 cm) for low ceilings and wider (8‑12 cm) for high ceilings. In terms of colour, baseboards matching the door frames give the most harmonious look; matching the floor makes the space appear larger.

When installing baseboards, the wall surface must be flat – use a 2‑metre straightedge; if the error exceeds 3 mm, repair in advance, or the baseboard will bulge and gap. Fix every 60 cm or so with wall plugs, and apply silicone sealant at the contact line between baseboard and wall to prevent later cracking. For corners, ensure 45‑degree mitre joints are tight and precise. A well‑executed baseboard detail can elevate the entire flooring job from "not bad" to "truly refined".
